What is Homeopathy?

April 18, 2009

Homeopathy or homeopathic medicine was an invention from the middle of the 18th century. The father of this wonderful system of medicine was Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy functions according to the so-called Law of Similars or Like Cures Like. Nowadays, homeopathic remedies are applied everywhere on the globe. The name of this science is derived from two Greek words, namely homoios which means similar and pathos which stands for suffering. For 200 hundred years, the effectiveness of homeopathy has been proved from every point of view.

There is an example: If you swallow some poison by accident, you are likely to be given Syrup of Ipecac in order to start vomiting. This syrup is made from a herb named Ipecacuanha, whose origins are in South America. The right translation of this Portuguese word is the plant by the road which makes you throws up, that is the plant induces vomiting.

Taken by a healthy person, the plant actually triggers also other symptoms: abundency of saliva, cleanliness of the tongue, extremely severe cough, resulting in chocking and finally vomiting, constant nausea. Normally, nausea disappears right after vomiting, but not in this case. Homeopathy relies on proving (that is an experiment on healthy subjects, like the one described above), in order to gather information about a specific remedy.

These homeopathic remedies are derived from herbs, animals and minerals. They are made by homeopathic pharmacies. As far as the U.S.A. is concerned, all of these laboratories are all under the shelter of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia, which represents the official authority accepted by the FDA, in other words, Food and Drug Administration. This is the only institution which can produce authorized homeopathic remedies.

With the help of homeopathy, diseases can be cured in a much more natural manner. There are permanent researches on many homeopathic remedies, which are updated and improved constantly, allowing homeopathy to become extremely efficient. Nevertheless, those who lack the required knowledge should be very careful as homeopathy, regardless of its natural origins, may become very perilous if handled the wrong way.

Repertories

Repertories are homeopathy books or, in some cases, list which comprise all kinds of information on a specific product, following a number of proving as well as verifications. The size of these repertories of homeopathic remedies can differ a lot. Those which are larger list homeopathic remedies in a hierarchical form, also mentioning the authority implicated. These repertories are used by every homeopathic physician on each and every patient for a maximum of efficiency in treating a disease. Due to the quantity of information regarding every remedy, all homeopathic doctors have such repertories because nobody could learn by heart all the existing information.

Symptoms

A homeopathic remedy is given to a patient taking into account his or her symptoms. There are two types of symptoms: common and particular. The first category is found in most diseases and it is not helpful for the doctor to settle for the right homeopathic treatment. However, particular or local symptoms are much more effective as they refer to a specific part of the body: my throat, my nose. Among the general types of symptoms, mention should be made of those starting with I: I am irascible or I am cold.

Intervention

It is important to know that every individual is unique. The same homeopathic remedy can have a totally different influence on two different people. For example, heats are a successful remedy for one person, but have disastrous effects on another. The right homeopathic remedy relies on the particularities of the patient as a person combined with the symptoms presented. The resulting differences are the ones pointing to the most efficient treatment.

Acute Disorders

Acute disorders such as chicken pox or a cold are listed as self-limiting in homeopathic medicine due to the fact that they comprise three stages: incubation, middle stage and convalescence. As far as acute disorders are concerned, their symptoms may be reduced in order to eventually be cured in a shorter period of time if the right homeopathic treatment is found. Also, the proper homeopathic treatment is able to prevent a possible secondary infection with the same virus.

Chronic Disorders

Homeopathy is very efficient when it comes to chronic disorders. In such a case, professional help is no longer necessary due to the fact that the homeopathic treatment can be continued at home without any problem. Usually, homeopathy treats the disorder in its depth, helping with the fortification of the immune system, obviously assisting the body to reject or at least to diminish the effect of the chronic disorder.
