What is Heart Disease?

Any medical disorder which affects the heart as well as the blood vessels which sustain the heart is known under the general term of heart disease.

There are many people who think that heart disease means just an illusory condition, although the number of heart disease cases is increasing continuously. Actually, statistics show that in 2007 for example, heart disease was the cause of most deaths in America.

 

What Is Heart Disease?

Some of the disorders which belong to the heart disease category are:

  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Arrhythmias
  • Inflammatory heart disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Hypertensive heart disease
  • Coronary artery disease or CAD in short
  • Valvular heart disease

 

Specific Characteristics of the Different Kinds of Heart Disease.

  • Cardiomyopathy: a heart disease which affects the heart muscle.
  • Arrhythmias: are also known under the name of irregular heartbeats which could be absolutely inoffensive or, on the contrary, very harmful, opening the way for other kinds of heart disease as well.
  • Inflammatory heart disease: this kind of heart disease affects the heart muscle which suffers an inflammation. At times, the inflammation can also affect the tissue around the heart muscle.
  • Congestive heart failure: such a disorder is triggered by any other kind of heart disease, thus the heart being forced to struggle hard in order to provide enough blood throughout the body. As a result, many of the organs in the body will no longer be fueled with the necessary amount of blood.
  • Congenital heart disease: a heart disease which is affecting the heart from the very beginning, being noticed in unborn children, infants or even later in life.
  • Hypertensive heart disease: it is triggered by the abnormal raise of blood pressure
  • Coronary artery disease or CAD: It is also known under the name of coronary heart disease or CHD and is caused by the narrowing and hardening of the arteries which reduce the amount of blood reaching the heart. The main cause for such heart disease is represented by the plaque which builds up on the inside of the arteries. CAD is the most ordinary kind of heart disease and the main reason why heart attacks and angina appear.
  • Valvular heart disease: represents the kind of heart disease having to do with the valves of the heart in one way or the other.
