Demi Monty answers:

Athleticism and lack of injuries are not directly correlated. Certainly, lack of conditioning could easily lead to an injury on the field. On the other hand, even the most supremely conditioned athletes – such as, say, Nadal, are subject to the vagaries of nature. Some people genes are just not as “good” as others, and as such, the cartilage breaks down faster than that of the other guy.

However, in Nadal’s case, it is the brutal style of his game that leads to the overuse of joints and muscles. To play like him, enormous wear and tear is inflicted. On the other hand, the seeming “effortlessness” of Fed’s game is what allows him to stay relatively injury free.

What is the best exercise to build chest muscle and reduce the spare tire?

I am 38 yrs old and in decent shape. I have been doing a lot of push ups and that is showing great visible results, but I really need to attack my spare tire and maybe move my chest focus to the upper and outside chest. I eat ok but could definately buckle down some more. I have a very physical job and workout probably once a week for real. Im really not seeing any improvement in my stomach or definition in my chest and arms. Im really looking for something i can do at home or on a quick break from work…similiar to push ups i guess. Something i can continuously chip away at. Thanks, in advance.

Demi Monty answers:

Re spare tire: that is fat. To burn fat, you need aerobic exercise for AT LEAST 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week. I recommend running.

Re chest and definition: that is muscle. Bench press, inclines, declines, military press, standing rows, butterflies and reverse flies, cable pulls, lat pulldowns, rows, etc. Ask one of the trainers at your gym.

Re stomach: situps and crunches, leg lifts, isometrics, etc.

You need to do TWO things: burn off the fat and build up the muscle. Doing one without the other will not work.

See these sites for ideas….both are really good:

Demi Monty answers:

To lose weight, you need to get your body to use up these stores of fat. The most effective way to do this is to:

1:) reduce the amount of calories you eat

2:) increase your levels of activity.

3:) jog in the morning BEFORE breakfast, since you would have been starving for a long time, the body will use fat supplies as energy!

Below are ways to reduce calorie intake without having to alter your diet significantly.

Replace fizzy drinks and fruit cordials with water.
Swap whole milk for semi-skimmed, or semi-skimmed for skimmed.
Eat less lunch than usual. For example, make your own sandwich and limit the use of margarine or butter and full-fat mayonnaise (store-bought sandwiches often contain both).
Stop taking sugar in tea and coffee.
Have smaller portions of the food you enjoy and avoid having a second helping at dinner.
Cut out unhealthy treats – such as confectionary, sugary biscuits and crisps between meals.
Cut down on alcohole intake.

Don’t be tempted to skip breakfast. While skipping a meal will reduce your calorie intake for that hour, it will leave you much hungrier later on.

Drinking fresh water also helps in removing waste and redundant calories which is great for losing weight and detoxifying the body. Drinking water frequently is a very important to maintaining a healthy diet and losing weight naturally.

Supplementing with Hoodia Gordonii Plus Appetite Suppressant contains 100% pure South African Hoodia plus other weight loss ingredients. On November 21, 2004 CBS correspondent, Lesley Stahl reported on 60 Minutes that a strange little plant, Hoodia Gordonii, “… Is a natural substance that literally takes your appetite away.” According to CBS, “Scientists say that it fools the brain by making you think you’re full, even if you’ve eaten just a morsel.

Hoodia extract is one of the most potent appetite suppressants available. It was originally discovered after the hunting tribes of the Kalahari Desert were found to use the root of the plant to starve off hunger. The extract was chewed while on long hunting trips, and when food was scarce.

Hoodia which is 100% natural, works as well as, if not better than any drug based appetite suppressant. It works so well, that Pfizer has been reported to pay over £20 million pounds in funding to isolate the active molecule found in Hoodia – known as P57. The reason why? Hoodia is completely side effect free.

I have personally used this product and it did help me to lose weight because i didnt feel hungry for most of the day, you must try it you will thank me, guaranteed;)

Will I make it? Some people doubt it. What to do?

I am an almost 24 year old female who has minor health issues like high cholesterol, high triglycerides and high blood sugars, I also drink 3 bottles of wine or other kind of alcohol or cocktail each and every weekend and some people say I wont make it because of how much I drink and also because of my health issues especially the high triglycerides they told me I am way too young to have that and that this is already a red flag that I am not very healthy and that I need to change some things in my life if I want to prolong it. How correct are they? Some people tell me “sorry doesn’t sound like you will live very long because of your health you have high triglycerides high cholesterol and other health issues and you do nothing about them and you also drink excessively and refuse to cut down or stop it altogether so probably you wont make it much longer” how correct are they I mean even though I have these health issues I am still very young and I think that these are all reversable especially the cholesterol and triglycerides (if I for example change my diet and eat more healthy and exercise) then I think the cholesterol and triglycerides will go down but I’m not sure how correct I am about this. But people tell me I also have to change my drinking habits because triglycerides can be triggered by high intakes of alcohol and they also tell me not only a high intake of alcohol triggers triglycerides but I could also be damaging my liver because that takes a beating too from taking in lots of alcohol all at once. They said that just changing my diet and exercising is probably not enough and that I should also consider cutting way down on the alcohol use or maybe even not drink at all anymore since I already have health issues so drinking might make them worse. They said three bottles every weekend is way too much and way over the recommended safe drinking that is currently medically advised for women and that I am also possibly doing damage to my liver drinking this much every weekend they said that as a woman I am only supposed to have one standard drink in a day and a bottle of wine has five standard drinks in it so 5 times three is fifteen standard drinks in a weekend so not only am I exceeding the daily safe recommendation but I am also exceeding the weekly recommedation of how much I should have in a week because that is 15 standard drinks and my limit should be no more then seven per week and no more then one per day so I am exceeding that by double. But people can say all they want I am very stubborn and refuse to obey this dumb rule cause one drink isn’t good enough for me I can’t be happy with only one standard glass of wine per day or one standard cocktail cause its too little and I must have all of it or none when I uncork that wine bottle or whatever bottle I choose to drink I do not like to leave nothing in there instead I prefer to drink it from start to end. That’s just me I don’t like to save it up. But if I just change my eating habits and start to exercise more and drink lots of water and possibly take vitamins or supplements to improve my health and change everything but my drinking habits will my health improve or not?
to Vince yeah I eat my vegetables so don’t worry about that.

It’s not a dumb rule Sarah and you know it, just because you don’t agree with the safety limits does not mean that they are not correct. It’s a pity you ask so many dumb questions when you know the answers very well, I’ve seen some of them to other questions from people like yourself, it’s a pity you don’t follow your own advice.

Demi Monty answers:

It about prescribing the right amount of exercise to facilitate the healing of the tissue into it’s mature form. Tendonitis starts out as inflammation, but without the proper remodeling program, it leaves the tendon in a physiologically immature tissue. This means that once you start to resume activity, it would just come back again unless you learn the appropriate exercises first. It will most likely be a few simple exericses and could probably focus on a home exercise program, but a progression of exercises is usually required for another 12 weeks to further facilitate healing.

I play tennis occasionally and I’m thinking about taking up golf lessons with a friend. I take a yoga class and do it on my own as well. How is this related to atheism?

Demi Monty answers:

By using a combination of cardio and resistance exercises.

A good exercise for the waist is the Janda situp.

Assume the standard bent-knee crunch position while your partner holds your legs just below the calves. This hand position is the secret to Janda sit-ups. Your feet should remain in contact with the floor at all times during the movement, and the knees should be flexed no more than 90 degrees. Fold you hands across your chest, inhale, and slowly sit up while applying steady pressure against your partner’s hands with your legs.

Stop when the tension in the abs is about to drop off (around halfway up) and exhale at the top of the movement. Inhale again and lower yourself all the way to the floor,

With respect to cardio you should do HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). HIIT works by alternating between increasing and decreasing your heart rate thus raising your resting metabolic rate.

For example you start off with 2 minutes of walking followed by 30 seconds of all out sprinting, this becomes 1 cycle. Complete 4 cycles lasting 10 minutes. Every other week increase by 1 cycle to a total of 8 cycles lasting 20 minutes. Once reached, remain with it. Do this for 3 days of the week.

Eating is also important. Eat 4-6 smaller meals throughout the day to boost your metabolism and increase your concentration. Drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep, about 8 hours.

Hope this helps

Field Trips
Field trips are a great way to enhance children’s education. They are more hands-on, creative, and more preferred. The question now is, why are schools putting an end field trips?
First of all, field trips introduce a hands-on and creative experience for kids. For example, a class visited the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There the children caught and played with the butterflies at the butterfly center. The tour guide even gave the class interesting information, about the different types of butterflies. When the class returned, they told the teacher about the new and fun experience.
Second, field trips are more preferred by children. In a class of 8th graders that were surveyed, the majority of the kids said classrooms are boring because all you do is sit there and learn. Most of the kids become tired enough, to doze off in class; resulting a decrease in the class’s average. Unlike when they are on a field trip, where they are up and about.
Furthermore, the children are more energetic when they are not in a classroom. For example, a teacher asked her students to create a project, by the end of the day. When the class was done, most of them were too lazy to even stand up. Unlike if they were on a field trip, were they will receive the 30 minutes of physical exercise they need every day.
On the other hand, the liability of the children is in the teachers’ hands. For instance, a class of third graders agreed to go on a field trip. Soon after sunset and the end of the trip, two kids were missing. The teacher said, “I do not know where the two kids are because there were too many of them to handle.” She added that she had no liability over those children.
Finally, I believe that field trips have more up sides then down. If kids are allowed to go on a field trip, they will experience a hands-on activity, will not become lazy, and also receive the physical exercise they need. This is why we should have 1 or 2 field trips per year.

Your thesis doesn’t match your argument. Your thesis is “why are schools putting an end TO field trips?” But then your arguments have nothing to do with why schools are putting an end to field trips (ie financial concerns). I’d change your thesis to, “I believe we should keep field trips.” Also, your one paragraph about the teacher losing two kids is kinda out of place. I understand youre trying seem fair and balanced, but it just comes across as awkward and outta place.

Here are my corrections, caps are ADDITIONS, and things in brackets are [subtractions]:

Field trips are a great way to enhance children’s education. They are more hands-on, creative, and more preferred. I BELIEVE WE SHOULD KEEP FIELD TRIPS.
First of all, field trips introduce a hands-on and creative experience for kids. For example, a class visited the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There the children caught and played with the butterflies at the butterfly center. The tour guide even gave the class interesting information [,] about the different types of butterflies. When the class returned, they told the teacher about the new and fun experience.
Second, field trips are more preferred by children. In a class of 8th graders that [WAS] surveyed, the majority of the kids said classrooms are boring because all you do is sit there and learn. Most of the kids become [SO TIRED THAT THEY] doze off in class; resulting a decrease in the class’s average. Unlike when they are on a field trip, where they are up and about.
Furthermore, the children are more energetic when they are not in a classroom. For example, a teacher asked her students to create a project [,] by the end of the day. When the class was done, most of them were too lazy to even stand up. Unlike if they were on a field trip, wHere they will receive the 30 minutes of physical exercise THAT they need every day.
[On the other hand, the liability of the children is in the teachers’ hands. For instance, a class of third graders agreed to go on a field trip. Soon after sunset and the end of the trip, two kids were missing. The teacher said, “I do not know where the two kids are because there were too many of them to handle.” She added that she had no liability over those children.]
Finally, I believe that field trips [ARE WORTH KEEPING]. If kids are allowed to go on a field trip, they will experience a hands-on activity, will not become lazy, and also receive the physical exercise they need. This is why we should have 1 or 2 field trips per year.

/end

Also i just noticed the three reason you give in the intro, arent the three reasons you give in the conclusion, and they dont match the reasons in your paragraphs. Fix that too, and you got yourself an A paper.

An Essay For homework, pls help correct it, or any recommendation thx?

Types of Exercises to Lose Weight
Losing weight is hard for most people; it requires commitment and hard work. A single exercise for everyone won’t work. People usually choose the exercises that they feel it fits them. Exercise has many benefits for our body. It has been proven that physical exercise is important for maintaining physical fitness and has been shown to prevent or treat serious and life-threatening chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, insomnia, and depression. I can classify the types of exercises to lose weight into three types: Aerobic Exercises, Anaerobic exercises, and Flexibility.

Aerobic Exercises involve physical activities such as, cycling, swimming, walking, rowing, running, hiking. Most people would love to do aerobic exercises but it takes time to exercise, because they work full time and also a family supporter. Time and rest is the first thing you need before you start exercising. Manage your time wisely, do not overdo and be alert with your health. For example, if you are sick, feel dizzy, have a headache or cold, you shouldn’t do aerobic exercise. This type of exercise is the simplest one of all types of exercises. Aerobic exercises increase cardiovascular endurance and help our body to fight many diseases. In addition, this type of exercise is great for those who focus on losing weight and not gaining muscular strength.

Anaerobic exercises such as weight training, functional training, or sprinting increase muscle strength. This type of exercise is not for everybody, but it is one of the most important solutions to lose weight. Not everyone can perform this kind of exercise and develop muscular in strength and endurance, because some has disabilities or disease that doesn’t enable them to stand or do certain things such as lifting heavy things and move things around. Have you ever seen a muscular guy who has a really bad habit and still look healthy and has low body fat? Muscle helps our metabolism to work better and burn more calories in our body than those who aren’t muscular and overweight. The more muscular you are, the more calories you burn per day.

Flexibility exercises such as stretching improve the range of motion of muscles and joints. We usually stretch when we feel the need to, but the study requires us to stretch three times at least. The benefits of stretching include: may improve ROM, reduce risk of injury, prevent post-exercise muscle soreness, and slow delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). There has been some study that claims stretching will improve the metabolism which helps to burn more calories, result of weight loss. Therefore, we should do stretching more often to help our body to resist the injury. In order to do weight training, first thing would be stretching and after the weight training so your muscles won’t suffer from lifting heavy weight. It also helps our joints to work properly and good for later in life.

I really recommend these types of exercises to everyone, because it helps the process of losing weight and wellness. Exercise is recommended for everyone, since it has many benefits that we all need. However, excessive exercise can be harmful. Without proper rest, the chance of stroke or other circulation problems increase.

Types of Exercises to Lose Weight

Losing weight is hard for most people; it requires commitment and hard work. A single exercise won’t work for everyone. People usually choose the exercises that they feel fits them. Exercise has many benefits for our body. It has been proved that physical exercise is important for maintaining physical fitness and has been shown to prevent and treat serious and life-threatening chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, insomnia, and depression. Exercises to lose weight can be classified into three types: Aerobic Exercises, Anaerobic exercises, and Flexibility.

Aerobic Exercises involve physical activities such as, cycling, swimming, walking, rowing, running, hiking. Most people would love to do aerobic exercises but don’t have the time. This could be because they work full time and/or may also have a family to support. Time and rest are the first things you need before you start exercising. Manage your time wisely, do not overdo and be alert with your health. For example, if you are sick, feel dizzy, have a headache or cold, you shouldn’t do aerobic exercises. Aerobic exercise is the simplest of all types of exercise. Also, it increase cardiovascular endurance and helps our body fight many diseases. Finally, this type of exercise is great for those who focus on losing weight and not gaining muscular strength.

Anaerobic exercises such as weight training, functional training, and sprinting increase muscle strength. This type of exercise is not for everybody, but it is one of the most important solutions to losing weight. Not everyone can perform this kind of exercise and develop muscular strength and endurance. For example, some people have disabilities or others may have a disease that doesn’t enable them to stand or do certain things such as lifting heavy things or the ability to move things around. Also, in comparison to those who aren’t muscular and overweight, strong muscles help our metabolism work better and burn more calories. The more muscular you are, the more calories you burn per day.

Flexibility exercises such as stretching improve the range of motion of muscles and joints. We usually stretch when we feel the need to, but the study requires us to stretch at least three times. There is one study that claims stretching will improve the metabolism, which helps burn more calories, resulting in weight loss. Therefore, in order to do safe and efficient weight training, the first thing to do would be stretching before and after weight training so the muscles won’t suffer from the lifting of heavy weight. Finally, flexibility exercise also helps our joints to work properly and good for later in life.

I really recommend these types of exercises to everyone because it helps the process of weight loss and wellness.
Nowadays there are various methods to relieve the pressure in modern life. Some read or exercise, others work in their gardens. What do you think are the best ways of reducing stress?

it is quite common these days for people living a ever-accelerated pace of lifestyle suffer from stress problem. personally, i believe there are at least 3 ways to alleviate it.

believe it or not, daydreaming may be one of the possible approaches helping people to get out of the restrictions of fiercely competitive world. life, with its responsibility and work can weigh a person down, and this sort of thinking is a relexing break from other more tiresome thoughts.moreover, daydreaming provides people a rich mental life, which may help people to see new and creative ways to solve problems and be more innovative in work.

besides, doing physical exercises is a certain way to relieve stresses.this is blindingly obvious, but many people just lose sight of this fundamental solution. nowdays, all kinds of sports facilities are sprouting up everywhere in the cities such as gyms, stadiums and sports clubs. these are an ideal place for people to go after work, which means people can train their bodies and muscles instead of exhausting their minds.

finally, breathing fresh air in a natural environment is also effective in relieve people’s mental strains.it is not necessary to go camping in a rainforest in order to be closer to the nature.for example, walking in a garden once in a while or sitting in a park for 10 minutes is sufficient for people to feel the nature’s intimate touch, thus shifting their attention from the urban trivials and curing their mental fatigue.

therefore, whether daydreaming, doing sports and being close to nature are all certain methods to relieve stresses. i think as long as people are doing smth different from what they normally do in the working environments, they are already on their way to relieving the pressure from the mordern society.

Demi Monty answers:

Dietary fiber, the edible portions of plant cell walls that are resistant to digestion, is an extremely beneficial component of our diets. Not only does it help ward off many diseases, it has been shown to aid in weight loss by reducing food intake at meals. This is because fiber-rich foods take longer to digest and thus result in an increased feeling of fullness and satiety. In addition, the more gradual absorption slows the entrance of glucose into the blood stream, thereby preventing large blood glucose and insulin spikes.
The recommended fiber intake is 20 – 35 grams per day for adults, or 10 – 13 grams for every 1,000 calories in the diet. This recommended amount should come from a combination of soluble and insoluble fiber, since each type provides different benefits. While it’s not necessary to track, a 3:1 ratio of insoluble to soluble fiber is typical. Although neither type is absorbed by the body, they have different properties when mixed with water, hence the designation between the two. However, due to overlap in function between the two types and disparities in measurements of each depending on the method used, the National Academy of Sciences has recommended that these terms “gradually be eliminated and replaced by specific beneficial physiological effects of a fiber”. Thus you may hear less about “soluble vs. Insoluble fiber” in the future.
Soluble fiber is “soluble” in water. When mixed with water it forms a gel-like substance and swells. Soluble fiber has many benefits, including moderating blood glucose levels and lowering cholesterol. The scientific names for soluble fibers include pectins, gums, mucilages, and some hemicelluloses. Good sources of soluble fiber include oats and oatmeal, legumes (peas, beans, lentils), barley, fruits and vegetables (especially oranges, apples and carrots).
Insoluble fiber does not absorb or dissolve in water. It passes through our digestive system in close to its original form. Insoluble fiber offers many benefits to intestinal health, including a reduction in the risk and occurrence of colorectal cancer, hemorrhoids, and constipation. The scientific names for insoluble fibers include cellulose, lignins, and also some other hemicelluloses. Most of insoluble fibers come from the bran layers of cereal grains.
Since dietary fiber is found only in plant products (i.e., nuts, whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables), these are essential to a healthy diet. The average American significantly falls short of the recommended amount of fiber, consuming on average only 12 – 17 grams per day. Ways to increase dietary fiber in your diet are:
Choose whole fruits and vegetables (with peels when possible) instead of juices.
Choose whole grain bread, cereals and pasta in place of their overly processed, refined counterparts.
Replace white flour (or at least a portion of it) with whole wheat flour in baked goods.
Replace white rice with brown rice.
Replace meat with beans or other legumes in meals. Lentils are perfect for this!
Try experimenting with the above tips. Slowly modify recipes until you attain a balance that is appetizing and tasteful to your taste buds. If you are not accustomed to a high-fiber diet, increasing fiber intake slowly will minimize any gas or bloating.

Good luck

15 years old new gym membership?

Hi everyone. I am 15 and for Christmas my mom gave me a gym membership for a year which is something i really wanted. She decided to give it to me early so i could stay active while on vacation.
I am doing Physical Therapy at the same gym twice a week for a stress fracture that is healing and my Therapist said it is ok for me to do some training as long as it doesn’t hurt. I’m 15, 125lbs, 5.6”-5.7”. I want to start working out and build up some mass and get more definition. I have a 6 pack but it isn’t very strong or defined, it is mainly there because im skinny and used to do a lot of crunches when i was younger. I was hoping i could get some advice on what exercises to do on which days. Physical therapy is on Monday And Wednesdays and I’m fine doing extra work on those days because i don’t do any upper body stuff with my Therapist. I want to bulk up my upper body especially my chest.
I play Basketball and Soccer and am in strong overall health. I do have some definition and can lift weights and respectable amount. I’m not weak or anything, but i do look it.

A good diet example would be to eat like this
7am- Bowl of wholegrain cerial, piece of fruit
9am – protein shake
11am- tuna tin
1pm- wholegrain bread sandwhich with turkey or tuna
3pm- tuna tin
5pm- protein shake
7pm- dinner (grilled fish and broccli) is the ultimate dinner
10pm- protein shake

if you want to bulk up use that, there is not many calories in their just at maintance level which is why i made it for you

you need to understand this though mate you are an ectomorph(search up body types) this will mean it will be very hard for you to gain much weight, at the end of the day you will look like a normal guy instead of skinny, you cannot become big and bulky im sorry with an ectomorphs matabolism its not possible, they can become very lean and atheltic though and quite strong

i suggest doing this workout regime

Monday – Chest tris
Tuesday – Back bis
Wednesday – Shoulders Legs
Thursday – Either rest day Friday – Chest tris
Saturday Back bics
Sunday Shoulders legs

friday is rest day. Or swtich it around so you can have a rest day at least once a week, and try to fill in abs in there at least once
A good diet example would be to eat like this

What types of workouts should I be doing to achieve a Bruce Lee physique?

First thing’s first I am VERY fit already. I’m 19 years old 5’7.5 at 145 pounds, I bench 3 sets of 10 reps with 145lbs, can do around 25 chin ups/30 pull ups, I run cross country and track for my college, I have a borderline 8-pack and my vertical leap is probably somewhere in the range of 30 inches. So I’m not an amateur, I’d like some serious advice.

I’m already pretty cut and stuff I guess, but I want to be in PERFECT physical condition. I want a body fat around 4%(it’s between 5% and 8 now%), I want to be very quick and explosive for any sports or fights I may get into, I still want to maintain my ability in track(I run a sub 4:45 mile), I want to be able to do 40 pull ups, and I want to increase my strength to great levels similar to gymnists while not really gaining any mass at all(I actually want to get back down to 135 pounds like I was last summer, remember like I said I’m a runner;) ).

Those are my goals for myself and I think it’s very realistic considering my current physical state, work ethic, and the fact that I feel my body responds very well to any type of training I put it through. I just need to know what kind of training to do. Like ….do I lift heavy or light, how many reps do I do(an exact number, not just high or low), what specific exercises should I do, how often should I workout/lift, how much food should I consume and what types of food? Remember, I want extreme muscle definition and strength like Bruce, but not really any mass, I don’t want to look like a football player. And while I want to become really strong, I also have to maintain a high level of endurance too.

Lately my weekly routine has consisted of lifting on monday’s and wednesday’s with the cross country team, then I lift on my own friday. Monday and Wednesday I do:
- the bench press I described above,
-3 sets of 10 hanging leg raises(knees to face, legs straight)
-3 sets of 10 arm curls, free weights, standing up, 35 pounds
-3 sets of 25 sideways sit ups on the ground on each side
-calve raises, lunges, and leg curls(when my hamstring isn’t hurting)

Friday I’ve been trying Iosometrics because I heard Bruce did those, but I’m not quite sure if the results are giving me the supposed strength and no mass they’re supposed to. I do:
-4 sets diff angles of 4 reps(holding 10 secs) on a bench machine
-5 sets of diff angles, 3 reps each angle, holding each 15-20 sec on the leg raises contraption
-3 sets of 4 diff angles on chin ups, 10 seconds each angle, 25 pounds on me

Alright that’s what I’m doing now, can anyone tell me what I should stop doing or what I should start doing to help me in my goal. Remember I just want to become very powerful and compact, getting more defined muscles, and totally improve my fitness in every aspect…btw I also ride a stationary bike 45 minutes-90 minutes 6 days a week too since I’m cross training on my cross country team(that will be converted to running when I am healthy again).

I’m pretty doubtful that someone knowledgable enough is going to answer me, but what the heck I’ll take the chance.

Help losing weight. 14 year old girl?

I’m 14 and I’ve been playing ice hockey since I was 3. I was ALWAYS really really fit and muscular for my age until I broke (or more shattered) my ankle in fifth grade. I missed a whole season for physical therapy and recovery. In that time I lost a lot of my muscle but I gained a lot of fat. In sixth grade when I started playing again I gained back all of my muscle but none of the fat went away. I still have the extra weight and fat and I know that if I didn’t you would be able to see my muscles and the definition I have from playing hockey. I have practice or a game almost every night and I definitely get enough exercise but I still have all this fat and I don’t know how to get rid of it. I eat healthy too. I only eat really high-carb foods before practice or games for energy and I know the weight isn’t from my eating. Is there any way I can get rid of the fat. I run a lot and I snowboard and roller blade too. Are there any primarily fat burning exercises I can do that are easy and I preferably don’t have to go outside to do seeing as it’s 8 degrees out?

Try doing some exercises for your problem areas before you do your cardio. When you do that, your body keeps burning fat on the area you just worked while you do cardio.

Some of the exercises I do are:crunches for abs, push-ups for arms and pec area, and leg lifts for legs and abs.

Good luck, but remember that your body is still growing until you hit your 20s, so don’t worry too much about it.

Demi Monty answers:

The best way to get a six pack is to do crunches, not sit ups. One important thing to remember is when you’re doing the crunches, tighten your abdominal muscles (like sucking your stomach in). This will help your abs form in the 6-pack way as opposed to just tightening your stomach.

Once you’ve done crunches daily for a while, with your knees bent, bring your legs up to a 90 degree angle and balance a basket ball on your shins while doing your crunches.

Remember to suck in your stomach!

Demi Monty answers:

Weight loss is an overall process. You need to think about many factors. There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me.

Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few additional small changes – walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.

Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can’t get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate – in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don’t. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies.

Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day.

Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body.

An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep. You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.

Check out websites about nutrition, exercise, weight training, etc. Here are a few helpful links.

To maintain a healthy lifestyle & get back to the size you want to be try this:

Try making small changes, if you really love a certain food that is ok, just cut down your portions, you don’t need to deprive yourself to be healthy. I myself am a huge “grazer” I eat a lot of fruit & veggies as snacks, baby carrots, snap peas, grape tomatoes, grapes, berries, peaches. I also love the Flat Earth veggie chips, Flat earth also has really good fruit chips, dark chocolate, quaker ranch rice cakes, popcorn, whole grain crackers & string cheese. These are all small snacks with low fat & low calories.

As for your overall diet try to cut down on your calories, eat lean protein, and whole grains – bread is not bad, so long as it is whole grain & high in fiber, also eat your veggies & drink lots of water. It is best to eat 1200-1500 calories per day, if you eat less than this your metabilism will slow down, making it harder to lose weight. NO fast food, no soft drinks (diet or regular) no eating unless you are hungery.

That being said, never underestimate the power of a good workout routine. In order to be healthy you MUST make time to exercise. Not exercising is not an option if you want to be healthy.
Lots of Cardio & weight training. Do 30-45 minutes of strength training 3-4 times per week followed by 45-50 minutes of cardio 5-6 times per week. Do your strength training 1st, it burns more calories. I also do loads of crunches prior to & after cardio. Also walk more during the day. Take a walk on your lunch break, walk to the store, aim for 10,000 steps per day a pedomiter is a great idea. The more active you are the more calories you will burn & the more weight you will lose.

To stay healthy & not get discouraged remember this:
It is not recommended that you lose more than 2-3 pounds per week. Rapid weight loss can be dangerous & is hard to maintain. Losing weight is difficult because 1 lb is 3000 calories, so you must burn 3000 calories per pound you want to lose.

If you really want to lose the weight you are going to have to use dicipline & work hard. Your health is worth it!

Demi Monty answers:

Okay the best way to lose weight is to concentrate on 2 main things, this is your diet and your workout.

—Diet—-

You need to get both of them right, now your diet should work like this… You should be eating a meal every 2-3 hours but not a junk food snack/meal. When i say meal i mean something which is healthy ie you might have some pasta with tuna, or a quick banana as a snack. The foods you eat should be COMPLEX carbs ie pasta, brown bread etc etc. You also want to try and get as much fruit + ved in a day. Make sure you have a good amount of protein throughout your meals.

Now you also need to work out your Basal Metabolic Rate, this simply tells you how many calories you burn a day, you need to find out how much your actually eating now its most likely to be in excess if it is you want to TRY and cut down 500 calories and stick to your new total amount. This shouldnt be hard because you will be eating Complex carbs which are just as filling but have a lower calorie count but are better for you than empty calories which are found in simple carbs.

—Workout—

Here are some tips for you

Okay now for your workout what you want to be doing is concentrating on many different types of cardio exercises. These are your jogging, swimming basically anything that makes you sweat and makes your heart pound. If you can join a gym as they have a lot of cardio machines there. Now once you get in to the hang of say jogging, what i mean by this is say you jog 20 mins everyday eventually you will come to a point where your not losing anymore weight this is like hitting a brick wall, this means you need to up the game, start jogging that extra five minutes a day, start taking that one less suagr in your cup of tea.

The most important tip to remember is to vary your cardio routines. Your body gets used to the same cardio routines done over and over. By varying your routine, your body will have to adjust, and thus causes a rise in the metabolic rate, thereby burning calories faster. But how many people do you see walking everyday in your neighborhood, or on the same treadmill or elliptical machine at the gym, and their body never seems to be changing. They do all that work and see no visible results. That is because the conventional wisdom is to get some form of cardio 3-5 days a week at 30 – 60 minutes.

A better alternative is high impact interval training. High impact training could include doing a warm-up of 3-4 minutes on a treadmill, followed by 1 minute at 8 mph, then 1 1/2 minutes at 4 mph, then run 10 mph for 1 minute, then walk at 4 mph for 1 1/2 minutes. You can repeat this 3 or 4 times to get a very effective, and not boring cardio workout.

You can also incorporate running or walking stairs, or do short sprints. The sprints need not be long (20,30, 50 yards), and you rest by walking back to the starting point. These are very effective. Have you ever seen a fat person running the 100 yard dash at the Olympics?

And often overlooked is the jump rope. Do short bursts of jump rope at a brisk pace with some faster paced, or double jumps, or criss crosses mixed in.

By applying these cardio tips on how to burn calories fast, you should be able to jump start your metabolism, and make progress towards your fitness goals

I can guarantee you that you will lose weight i have had to both GAIN and LOSE weight as i was an ex boxer I assure you that this will work, but the most important tip is motivation from YOU!

Best Of Luck

I’m 69, active, healthy, read a lot, do mental & physical exercises daily.Yet I feel dementia is setting. Why?

This is interesting,my Father is a similar age and i’m medically trained.I thought i saw the early signs of dementia in him.
It’s got to be diagnosed,My Dad came back from a holiday from his home village and all symptoms were gone-i was even going to suggest he see his Doctor.

As you are active and prob have a normal blood pressure you may want to look at statins to reduce cholesterol, the plaque of which not only causes heart problems but does contribute to reduced blood flow or cardiac output to the brain.

A routine blood test for TSH may be in order or you may simply be over-thinking about your age at this juncture .

I think brisk walks in friendly places are a must- go somewhere you really like and spend a week away from same surroundings and see if you still feel you are in decline and keep in touch!

Enjoy yourself!

What are some very effective swim exercises?

I am in the Army and will be leading our physical training (PT) in the morning.
Demi Monty answers:

Interval training is the quickest way to improve.

For example: do a set of 10X 50 yards swims at a set timed interval where they have to swim then go again. Then let them rest a few minutes and do another set of a different stroke or a different amount like maybe 10X 100 yard swims.

Decrease the time interval and do more.

At the end do a moderate continuous swim to let them cool down and loosen up.

When will President Obama propose the correct health plan (e.g. exercise, eat right and get enough sleep)?

President Obama has proposed that it is a ‘right’ to have health care but most of the people crying for it are the very ones that don’t take good care of themselves (e.g eat fast foods, smoke, drink alcohol, etc.). While not taking care of their bodies is a personal ‘right’ I wonder if providing medical care to these individuals will make a dent in their well-being. Why don’t we just add extra tax to those who do not meet the physical guidelines as set forth by the Office of Health and Services (better known as the Government)?
