It is a well-known fact that any physical exercise is advantageous for the body. Regular exercise is not only good for the muscles, for a fit body, but also for a fit mind. Why? Because exercise works wonders when it comes to brainpower. People have been asking themselves for centuries if physical exercise has the power to improve someone’s intelligence. The athletes from ancient Greece were known to be some of the most intelligent individuals of those times.
Studies on lab mice proved that regular physical exercise helps the nerve cells to be produced faster. All mice that played on their running wheels proved to learn faster and better their tasks as opposed to the inactive ones which were slower in every way. Another experiment compared a group composed of young and older mice which used their running wheels to exercise daily, to another group comprising mice of the same ages and number which were not allowed to perform any physical exercise for one month. Both these groups were given a test in which they had to find a certain platform and having as point of departure a small water pool.
It came out that those older mice belonging to the group which had physical exercise were capable to reach their goal almost as easy as the young mice who did exercise. On the contrary, the older mice from the second group did not stand a chance as they suffered but a few brain cell renewals. This kind of experiments determined the researchers to come to the conclusion that exercise helps neurons to develop.
The brain usually becomes more active due to the fact that physical exercise causes the heart to pump an increased quantity of oxygen. This leads to better neuron connections which can be translated into more coherent thinking. Therefore, it can be said that physical exercise stimulates the memory and the capacity to learn things much faster. Daily exercise ensures better results when it comes to academic evaluations and that is proven by student athletes who normally have good performances not only from a physical point of view, but also from a mental one and that is owed to regular exercise.
Due to the fact that there is a strong connection between body and mind, those students who performed daily physical exercise managed to have some of the best test results. There was a research project which aimed to help the growth of fresh neurons during an aerobic exercise program that lasted for three months. As well, other researchers showed that constant exercise helps the older neurons to weave webs among each other, causing the brain to work sprightly and expeditiously.
Every contraction and release of a muscle during an exercise produces chemicals that reach the brain coming through the stream of blood. There, the chemicals give birth to other substances, among which a protein named brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which increases better thinking.
Exercise in general is extremely good in order to prevent heart conditions, but could also hold off Alzheimer’s disease. The same goes for ADHD (a disorder characterized by deficit of attention and hyperactivity) and other types of disorders involving cognition. During adulthood, most of us renew a great percentage of nerve cells with the help of the above-mentioned BDNF. Naturally, more neurons die as we become older. However, losing these neurons does not mean that other new ones will not be produced. Physical exercise could be of great help for neurogenesis. Experiments proved that physical exercise could trigger the development of cerebral blood vessels even in animals which were sedentary and of middle age.
Researches and studies regarding the advantages of physical exercise are still in progress. One thing is clear, that old Latin saying “Mens sana in corpore sano” (healthy mind in a healthy body) is absolutely true, therefore do not give up physical exercise because it is of the utmost importance for a harmonious development of your mind.
